Haikou's Shishan Volcanic Cluster National Geopark, a natural volcano geology museum is located just 15 kilometers from the city centre and gives a great insight into the early formation of Hainan Island. China's southernmost Hainan Province opened the island's first national geological park at the Shishan volcano clusters on Saturday.edited by hainantour dot net.Located 15 kilometers to the southwest of Haikou, the capital of Hainan, Shishan is one of the dormant volcano clusters erupting about 10,000 years ago, which is rare in China, insiders said.
The volcano park possesses more than 40 volcanoes of different sorts and over 30 lava tunnels, storing abundant high quality mineral water and thermal spring resources.Tropical primeval forests can still be seen in the park while utensils made of basalt and some ancient houses are also available to the visitors.edited by hainantour dot net. An official with the park said the Ministry of Land and Resources approved to build a national geological park in this area because the variety of volcano species have already made Shishan an important geological site of China.
The ministry also decided, in November 2005, to apply for a world geological park toward United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) by integrating the Shishan park together with the Huguang Rock in Guangdong and Weizhou Island in Guangxi, south China. The UNESCO will inspect the above three places and made their final vote in August. edited by hainantour dot net.
The eruption of the ancient Qiongbei Volcano left the most intact volcano craters here. According to geologists, the last eruption happened about 13,000 years ago. And now, 36 relics of the craters can be seen here. Among them the highest one is the Saddle Hill which is about 222.8 meters up.
Start your day early as you will need your energy, to climb the many stairs to the top of the volcano. Once you reach the top, you can descend on the various paths to the caves inside the extinct volcano. On a clear day, the views over Haikou City are picturesque and give you a birds-eye view of the area below. On the day that we visited with our parents, it was hot and humid. edit by hainantour dot net.
The park was awarded Geopark status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Today, the park has the volcano cultural garden, ecological garden, the green corridor, and the crater's garden, attracting visitors from both home and abroad. You can also enjoy the rustic flavor of the local people, try the country house food, and purchase the local handiworks too. (writen by Agnes)
